Callaloo Trinidadian Kitchen in Lancaster

While visiting Lancaster my wife found this eatery online & suggested we give it a try given the high reviews...we ordered takeout a head of time, the staff was very pleasant over the phone & upon entrance as well...we ordered the curried chicken w/ jasmine rice instead of buss up shut & the spicy pepper beef...the portions were small & the curry sauce was bland & not enough meat, felt like more potatoes, chick peas & pumpkin then chicken...just not authentic for me, taste wise...if you've ever eaten carribean food, the spices & herbs are flavorful but this misses that authentic taste.

Charming place that serves delicious Trinidadian cuisine! Anything on the menu is really great, but I tend to get the Buss-Up-Shut and Pineapple Chow. Not only is the food worth stopping in for, but also the service is great and the decor is inviting. The restaurant sits on the corner of Mulberry and Lemon street so parking could be a challenge. Lunch time tends to get pretty busy. I've never been for dinner but I would imagine it gets equally busy in the evenings. Can't wait to go back for Pineapple Chow!

Very unique, delicious food - basically a combination of African, Caribbean and Indian cooking. Good service. Dining room is pretty tight but doesn't detract from the experience.

We’ve been wanting to try this restaurant for months but timing just never worked out. Then the pandemic hit and we stopped eating out all together. Well we decided to break our “eating out fast” with Callaloo. We drove 40mins each way for take out and it was AMAZINGGGGGG!! We ordered probably 80% of the menu and everything was delicious! We definitely will be back!

Where do I begin? This place is hands down the best restaurant we have visited on our trip to Lancaster. Now, I am from NYC and to say that this is one of my all-time favorite restaurant experiences is a big deal. My husband and I both ordered the buss-up shut curried chicken special with a side of jasmine rice. Everything was mouth watering and delicious. The chicken pulled apart and melted in your mouth and the flavors, oh the flavors, were amazing! The Callaloo Pepper Sauce was just what we have been searching for. We even bought a bottle to take home! What really made our visit special was the service we received from our waiter Scott. He was kind, personable, attentive, and really knew his stuff. He even brought us out a special hot sauce that they made in the kitchen that night! Thank you for such a wonderful dinner and experience on our last night in Lancaster. We will most definitely be back again!

My mother and I were traveling to Lancaster for a quick vacation. We were surprised to see “home” I. Lancaster (we are from Trinidad!) the food was amazing and the restaurant is beautiful! Well done!

I have never had a bad meal here. Everything is delicious and complex. Buss up shut is phenomenal. Pineapple chow is fresh and spicy. All the flavors marry well and deliver a complexity to the palate.

I am not one to leave reviews but this place deserves recognition for its amazing food - best food I have had in a long time. I got the curry chicken dish and it was so flavorful and the meat was so tender. Also a clean and lovely atmosphere. GO HERE! But make reservations.

Another gem in the city. Strange hours? Yes. Amazing food? YES. Callaloo staff is super friendly, I’ve been a handful of times over a decent period of time and there are familiar faces still there. Which means they treat their employees well. Food is superb, I’m Indian and love to taste different twists on cultural foods. Trinidad is filled with people of Indian heritage and it shows with their food. The menu at this restaurant provides you with enough options to experiment with your taste buds but also find items you know you’ll like. I’m sure during this pandemic they like everyone else need us to support them. I will gladly patronize them. Check it out, you’ll be the next person writing a raving review.

The cassava fries and sauces were better than any fried potato I've ever had, and the fish and shrimp curry was a delicious warm-up on a dreary night. Always get the buss-up-shut if you can. Flaky and tasty.

The jerk chicken is super simple but so amazing. Perfect balance with the coconut rice, you can tell the chicken was really well cooked before they even sauced it.

Limited seating to observe social distancing. Quick and friendly service, super fresh and incredibly delicious food. Wonderful place!

Everything about this place is first rate and five star. Staff a super friendly, meals are nothing short of amazing. All the staff were more than willing to engage in conversation along the night and provide advice about things to do and see in Lancaster. Must try the doubles as a starter and the beef Curry and fish and shrimp were full of flavour.

We got take out from callaloo during the pandemic and it was very good! The woman who took care of our order was especially nice and even though it took an hour she made sure that it was all there and she was extremely helpful. I really like the jerk chicken although it didn't taste like traditional jerk chicken. Our resident vegetarian like the general tsos cauliflower. The aloo stuff with cheese and potatoes was also a hit. She was very surprised at how delicious the doubles were -- I told her so!Now she's going to have to look for doubles in New York City. The only dish I didn't really like was the spicy steak. Flavor was kind of one-sided and the meat seemed a little tough.The weird thing was the rice on the pork belly was undercooked but the other rice that came as a side for the other dishes was fine. The pork belly was really good.

There is parking half a block away, and that is a huge plus. Food was amazing because its all locally prepared made to order and not off a sysco truck or some other restaurant supply company. If I wanted to just heat and eat I would eat at home and let my kids cook. I ordered the spicy beef. It was spicy but very flavorful. We got 2 apps that were very good and my friend got the fried rice. All was amazing. Its minimalistic by design, not needing to rely on the decor to distract attention away from the food. The place is packed and your conversation will be over heard. If you are plotting to overthrow Specter and need a place to confer with James Bond before operations commence this is not your place. If you are looking for a place with exotic but approachable food to demonstrate you are in the know of great places to eat, this is your place. The fact that you won't break the bank is a nice benefit.

Although the service was great and the store was quite cute, if you’re actually Caribbean I wouldn’t recommend eating here. The food had all the right flavors however everything was dull, as in the right seasonings were there but not in sufficient quantity as is the case with authentic Caribbean food. I drove over an hour to come and check this place out- I was so excited to find a Trini restaurant. Unfortunately for my palate it was a bit bland. I won’t be returning.

Ate the curry fish and shrimp many times, and it’s always amazing. Today was no exception! Beautiful flavor and texture. No wonder it’s my favorite.

My family and I ordered takeout from Calalloo a few weeks ago for the first time - I was really excited about trying a new place and it was everything I could have hoped for! We ordered A LOT of food and every dish was absolutely delicious. Can’t wait to go back soon!
